Success at Exmoor Pony Festival

Were you on a self-catering holiday on Exmoor and part of the huge crowd that gathered at this year’s Exmoor Pony Festival? Over 1,300 people attended to make the event a huge success for all concerned!

The festival, which is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Heart of Exmoor scheme saw record numbers attend the free family-friendly fun day festival. The event was packed full of walks, pony rides, cream teas and crafts too.

The week-long event was held on Exmoor National Park, a fitting venue as this is the home of the famous and well-loved Exmoor pony. The festival included special events and activities to celebrate and rediscover the unique pony breed and the people who take care of the free-roaming moorland herds. The festival also gave the opportunity for people to witness the ancient pony breed in its native landscape, Exmoor National Park.

There was a display of pony agility through captivating demonstrations and workshops as well as Exmoor Pony Land Rover safaris, and an art exhibition.

This year’s festival unveiled their first-ever ‘meet the herds’ exhibition featuring many other beautifully trained ponies from Exmoor's moorland herds.
Hundreds came to see the art exhibition and pony story readers met Exmoor writer Victoria Eveleigh, best known for works such as the Horseshoe Trilogy. Herd owners were more involved this year and the festival saw close cooperation between key organisations.

The rare breed that is the Exmoor Pony is renowned for its intelligence and their ability to withstand harsh upland conditions.
