Welsh Takeover at West Somerset Railway

This year’s Autumn Steam Gala running on the West Somerset Railway sees a twist to the provisions as organisers have decided to take on a Cambrian theme, Cambrian being the Latin for Wales, and adopt the Cambrian Railways persona.
With West Somerset proudly holding the title of England’s longest steam railway, not far from the Exmoor holiday cottages around the area, the stations will be assuming ‘alter-ego’s’ as they are transformed into a selection of the those that were on the old Cambrian route.

The event, which will take place over four days from October 3rd to the 6 th sees the summit station of the West Somerset Railway, Crowscombe Heathfield, changing its appearance to that of "Talerddig".

There’s more to add to the spirit of the event as the volunteer ladies involved will be donning authentic Welsh Costumes that they have created.

A total of 10 stations will be changing to their pseudo-locations for the day. The list can be seen below:

Bishops Lydeard as Shrewsbury

Crowcombe Heathfield as Talerddig

Stogumber as Aberangell

Williton as Oswestry

Doniford a Penhlig

Watchet as Aberdyfi

Washford as Machynlleth

Blue Anchor as Barmouth

Dunster as Criccieth

Minehead as Pwllheli

Eight steam locomotives of Great Western origin will be on hand to work through a busy timetable of services including 5029 "Nunney Castle", 6960 "Raveningham Hall", "Large Prairie" 4160, "Mogul" 9351, as well as four of the "Manor" Class which worked most of the prestige trains in Mid Wales in the 1950' and 1960's. These are 7812 "Erlestoke Manor", 7822 "Foxcote Manor", 7827 "Lydham Manor" and 7828 "Odney/Norton Manor". The stationary exhibit of the narrow gauge locomotive Corris/Talyllyn Railway number 3 "Sir Haydn" will be in attendance also.

Model railways, workshops, and museums will be available to get involved with and peruse along the route with places to eat and drink too.
